Vervoorn and Haining got the fastest start. Nielsen caught a crab at the Black Buoy, leaving the others a clear but closely fought run to the Milepost. Vervoorn, steering a perfect course, led Haining by a length at Hammersmith. Haining pushed hard at Chiswick Eyot and the Crossing Point, but Vervoorn menaged to stay in front for the remainder of the race.
Merlin Vervoorn was the first winner to take the TWSC trophy abroad.
First defeat of Peter Haining in three years time, stopping him gaining his fourth triple: three times Lightweight single sculls world champion, three times Scullers Head champion and three times Wingfield Sculls Winner - and now twice Thames World Sculling Challenge Winner.

Britain's top heavyweight sculler, Guin Batten, faced Britain's top lightweight sculler Sue Appelboom. Appelboom led in the early stages, but Guin, sculling very well, drew away from Fulham From here Batten's win was never in doubt.
